I guess that's one way to load it.

I assume they loaded it backward for weight distribution purposes. Backwards puts the front wheels of the truck just behind the trailer axles.

I just wonder about the aerodynamics of the truck traveling backwards. It must act like a big parachute. This may not be much of an issue on a car carrier, but I think it would be rough when your tow vehicle is the same size as the vehicle being towed.

I thought weight was supposed to be situated the opposite way. No?

unless there’s a lot of shit in the bed that looks like a bad idea.  IIRC pickups have pretty front-biased weight distribution (60/40 or worse) so that looks like he’s begging for trailer sway.

I often see brand new car carriers and wonder the same thing. Hey, was that $100 k Mercedes’ rear spoiler rated for 75mph when used as an air scoop?

Me thinks that is not a good idea.

I’m assuming th e weight balance was ok since most of the truck was ahead of the trailer  axles. I think the trailer was too short to turn the truck around and still have an acceptable tongue weight.

It would be a close thing. The front wheels are just behind the trailer axles. I assume the trailer was too short to turn the truck around and still have an acceptable tongue weight.

Meh. Here in the U.K. if you passed your driving test after 1997, you need to do car and trailer training and test (B+E test) before you can pull a trailer over 750Kg total weight.

Or a trailer and towing vehicle up to a total 3,500Kg.

Loading a truck that direction with the front wheels very close to the trailer axle gives a better weight distribution, keeping excess weight off the tongue, which keeps the load more stable.

Honestly the only bad idea I see here is using the tow hooks to secure it.

It will keep the tongue weight down.  I can see that as a bonus especially if it is a heavy pig of a diesel.

I was wondering more about the aerodynamics of the backwards-facing truck.

Anything on a trailer sucks for aero, not sure I’d worry about what way it was facing so much as what way gets it the most stable.

Whats wrong with the tow hooks? 1st gen superduties hooks are tied directly into the frame

Not something I would do. It reminds me of people chaining to their receiver hitch, then watching the whole hitch come flying out from under the vehicle.

Tying directly into the frame with the chains is a far better idea.

Tying a vehicle down by the frame is a lot less ideal than thing it down by the wheels or lower suspension arms. Via the frame, the suspension will still compress over bumps and momentarily put slack in the tie downs. This beats up the tie downs over time and can let the vehicle move around more than you might imagine on the trailer. The abrupt stop of the tow vehicle’s suspensionv against the tie downs on rebound  can also sometimes induce some interesting stability dynamics.

That is done for weight distribution to keep tounge weight on check on the trailer.   The aerodynamic effect is usually fairly negligible.  From a stability standpoint, it would be better facing forward if the tow vehicle could handle the tongue weight.  Too much tongue weight never hurts stability of the trailer, but it can lead to unloading the front of the tow vehicle which will cause stability problems for the tow vehicle.

true. Ive done tow hooks, wheels, axles, and never had any issue. Now days i usually put a strap thru each wheel and call it good

Yea i get that. But i have towed superduties many miles by the tow hooks with no issues.

Now days i usually always just do a strap thru each wheel if they will fit

I generally just chain down by the axles and call it a day. Keeps it from moving around.
